Welcome to the third issue of LFNs Newsletter. In this issue, we will be catching up on events that have happened from the last quarter up until now.
The International Youth Day celebrated August 12th every year had year 2021 theme as Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health.This unique agricultural theme resonated well with Leventis Foundation Nigeria agricultural technical capacity building program for youths as we specially tookout time to celebrate with a host of events across our training schools in Nigeria.The events were aimed at educating youths and farmers on the adoption of environment-friendly practices. Activities included lectures from guest speakers, viewing of documentaries, as well as discussions and presentations to illustrate how food systems could be transformed through innovation.
Following the grant won from the Dutch Government by the consortium comprising of Leventis Foundation Nigeria, Netherland-African Business Council (NABC), Delphy BV, Verbos Academy and Kucheza BV to implement horticultural training for staff of Centre for Dryland Agriculture, Bayero University and farmers in Northern Nigeria under The Orange Knowledge programme. Leventis Foundation Nigeria carried out physical training alongside a virtual trainer Herbert Stolker on Greenhouse Management in Kano State. The training seeks to enhance the knowledge and skills on sustainable cultivation of highly nutritious food groups. Other sets of training include; Integrated Pest Management, Labour Management and Water Management for Resilient Horticulture.
In line with our drive to extend the reach of our programme, Leventis Foundation Nigeria is exploring a partnership with Federal Polytechnic Nekede in areas such as capacity training for youths, staff development and exchange programmes, research, and new product development in aquaculture, food processing and agric extension services amongst others. This was discussed during the working visit by theRector, Engr. Dr. M.C Arimanwa (third from left) alongside other senior members of the institute who were received by the Executive Director, Leventis Foundation Nigeria, Dr. Hope Ovie Usieta (fourth from left).
